The most iconic castle along the Romantic Road has to be Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein), the dreamy former palace of the much-storied King Ludwig II, the ‘Mad’ King. Famously used as the blueprint for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty castle, Neuschwanstein’s snow-white façade, soaring turrets and backdrop of forested mountains make it a castle truly fit for a king (or queen). The king built a number of equally magnificent castles throughout Bavaria and those traveling the Romantic Road can also visit the young King’s childhood home, Hohenschwangau Castle, which offers dazzling views over the Alpsee from its traditional crenelated ramparts.
